The Ruth’s Chris story begins in 1965 in New Orleans, when a determined woman named Ruth Fertel took a bold leap into the restaurant business. With no prior experience and against the advice of many, Ruth purchased a modest 60-seat restaurant called Chris Steak House.

Ruth was driven by a strong work ethic and a desire to give back to her community. At the original location, she famously employed an all-female staff of hardworking single mothers, who became affectionately known as the “Broads on Broad Street.” When Hurricane Betsy hit New Orleans and caused a power outage in 1965, Ruth generously distributed all of her perishable food to help her neighbors in need.

After a kitchen fire forced Ruth to relocate the restaurant, she renamed it, and Ruth’s Chris Steak House was born. Ruth believed in treating her guests like family, a tradition that continues to this day, more than fifty years after she founded the original restaurant.
