Eat This!

January 22nd, 2012

Ever heard of a superfood? These are food that have been found to help prevent disease, control weight and maintain overall good health.

Here are ten superfoods (in no particular order):

  • Chocolate: An ounce of dark chocolate a day can do the body good. Note: the darker the chocolate, the more nutrients you’ll get. Dark chocolate boasts powerful antioxidants, which has been shown to help reduce inflammation and help lower blood pressure.
  • Blueberries: Low calories, low carb and high in fiber, blueberries are packed with antioxidants, including vitamin C and anthocyanidins.
  • Almonds: Almonds boast heart-healthy unsaturated fats, protein and the antioxidant vitamin E. Plus, they’re a good source of fiber, riboflavin, magnesium, phosphorus and copper. To avoid sodium, go for unsalted raw or blanched varieties.
  • Quinoa: This perfect protein contains 15 percent of your daily dose of iron and many energy-producing B-vitamins.

  • Sweet Potatoes: One medium sweet potato contains more than 400 percent of your daily dose of beta-carotene (the antioxidant form of vitamin A) and the antioxidant lycopene. It’s also a good source of vitamin C, fiber and heart-healthy potassium.
Greek Yogurt: This hunger buster offers twice the hunger-fighting protein per ounce than traditional yogurt.
  • Beans: This diet staple is a great source of protein, carbohydrates and fiber.
  • Eggs: The incredible egg provides close to 100 percent of your required protein building blocks.
  • Salmon: This fatty fish is brimming with omega-3 fats (the good kind), which help ward off high blood pressure, sudden-death heart attacks, Alzheimer’s and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • BroccoliThis vegetable has been known to reduce the  risk of cancer. And to boot, it is packed with antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin A.

Here’s to a healthy you!
